INLAYS / ONLAYS

Inlays and onlays are an attractive and equally resilient alternative to composite fillings, providing great strength, which makes them a great option for supporting weakened molars or back teeth. At Bay Dental, we’re happy to offer inlays and onlays to all of our Vancouver patients. Teeth occupying the back of the smile that have a moderate to moderate level of decay or fractures may be recovered with this specialized treatment.

For teeth that have to stand up to heavy chewing, teeth that are decomposed, or teeth that have formerly gone through comprehensive restoration, inlays and onlays can provide excellent security and restoration qualities. Different from crowns, which cover the entire tooth, these are planned to safeguard a certain part of the tooth and need less prep, as a result.

Made from composite resin, ceramic, or porcelain, inlays and onlays are a wonderful treatment option for many patients. These restorations can be matched to the precise colour of your other teeth for a hardly-detectable look, resulting in a natural appearance! Both inlays and onlays can be used to replace obvious-looking or damaged dental fillings.

Inlays and onlays are obviously different from each other. Inlays are used when decay or damage appears between the top indentions or cusps of the teeth. They need to be firmly bonded to the teeth. Onlays, on the other hand, are an excellent choice when decay includes several of the cusps. Plus, this type of remediation deals with rotted or damaged areas by getting rid of much less of the natural tooth structure than other treatment choices.

Although they’re different procedures, at Bay Dental, inlays and onlays can both be tailored to compliment the shade of your natural teeth, giving off a more appealing, natural look. They are also made from the very same porcelain material utilized in crowns and bridgework. Porcelain inlays and onlays have a similar look to composite-based products, but because of the laboratory process involved in their development, they are found to be more durable and stronger than their composite counterparts.

Another similarity is that inlays and onlays are placed very similarly. An impression of the affected tooth will be taken and you will be fitted with a temporary to last you in between visits. The impression will then be used to develop your personalized inlay or onlay at our dental lab. When the restoration is completed at the lab, you simply come back to our downtown Vancouver office and your permanent inlay or onlay will replace the temporary one. Because no downtime is required, you can easily return to your day after your procedure is complete.

If you have any questions about our inlay and onlay procedures, please contact Bay Dental today and we will be happy to schedule you a consultation or provide you with further information.
