The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that covers basic dental care for Canadians who do not have private dental insurance. We are an assignment-based provider, which means we handle the paperwork and bill the government, administered by Sun Life, directly on your behalf.
You may qualify if you:
Eligibility is confirmed through your CRA My Account. Enrollment is done by the patient at home through the CRA My Account portal. If you have not registered yet, our team can walk you through what to expect and answer questions before you come in.
Not sure if you qualify? Give us a call and we can help you figure it out before you come in.
Please note that you must renew your CDCP plan every year starting June 1st; otherwise, your coverage may be cancelled and you would need to re-apply. If you are not sure whether your renewal is current, call us before your appointment and we can help you verify. You can also check your status directly:
We bill the CDCP directly. If a treatment is only partially covered or not covered at all, we will attempt to provide you a clear cost estimate before anything happens. You decide if the cost is acceptable.
Note that there will always be a portion to pay even if your coverage letter states that you are covered at 100% because the government’s National Fee Grid is lower than the British Columbia Dentists Fee Guide. Bay Dental will always tell you what to expect before work starts.
Bay Dental is an assignment-based CDCP provider. That means we submit the claim directly to the government, administered by Sun Life, on your behalf and take care of all the paperwork. You do not pay the full amount upfront and wait to be reimbursed later.
After your appointment, we submit the claim electronically and the response from Sun Life showing how much they will pay comes back right away. Before you leave, you will know exactly what you owe. You pay only your portion at that point.
Some dental offices work on a non-assignment basis, which means the patient pays the full cost upfront and waits for the government, administered by Sun Life, to reimburse them. We are trying to help by making it easier for you to access dental care; by having you pay only your portion.
Coverage depends on your age and household income. The plan uses three co-payment tiers based on your adjusted family net income:
Keep in mind that even if your coverage letter states 100%, there will still be a portion to pay. We will go over the exact numbers with you before any work begins. Here is a general breakdown of what services are available:
Preventive care (most patients)
Restorative care (income-dependent)
What the CDCP does not cover:
Worth knowing: the CDCP typically covers one cleaning appointment per year, with a small amount toward a second cleaning.
Our front desk team helps patients with this regularly. Enrollment happens through your CRA My Account, and most people find it straightforward to do at home. Once you have enrolled, bring your confirmation to your next appointment and we take it from there.
We have helped a lot of long-time patients, particularly seniors who never had dental coverage, get set up on the plan. If that sounds like you, it is worth a quick call to find out whether you qualify.
You do not need to wait for your physical Sun Life card to arrive. As long as you have your member ID and coverage start date from your welcome letter, you can book and attend your appointment. The front desk can help confirm your coverage is active before treatment begins.
Yes, and there is no cap. We are actively accepting new patients under the plan. New patient appointments are generally available within one to two weeks. If you are dealing with pain, a broken tooth, or something urgent, call us directly. We do our best to get those cases seen the same day.
Yes. The CDCP covers children under 18, and the eligibility criteria are the same as for adults. Bay Dental sees patients of all ages. If a child's case needs a specialist, we will let the parent know and help with the referral. For urgent situations, call us and we will find a slot.
When booking, let the receptionist know you are a CDCP patient. If you have not enrolled yet, mention that too and we can point you in the right direction.

“I recently switched dental offices as Bay Dental is more convenient for me and I had a great experience. The space is new and modern with big windows that let in lots of natural light. The receptionists were friendly and welcoming and the hygienists were attentive and made me feel comfortable. Dr Tu and Dr Maycher were thorough and answered all my questions without rushing - clearly showing they genuinely care about their patients and take pride in their quality of work. I really appreciate the care provided by the whole team and have no hesitation to refer anyone to this dental office looking for oral care!”
“If you are searching for the finest dental services in Vancouver, look no further! From my own experiences, I can attest their staff offers consistent, professional care. What distinguishes this dental location, is the palpable sense of warmth and welcome that greets you upon every visit. As a family-owned enterprise, the spirit of hospitality is woven into every interaction. The staff foster an atmosphere where personal connection is valued, and each customer feels as if they are part of an extended family. Recently, I was having extreme tooth pain, the owner seen to my needs immediately while not only relieving me from my toothache; the process was informative and painless. This tells all, beyond the inviting ambiance the expertise of the team is nothing short of exceptional. I believe it’s rare to encounter a business which balances professionalism with personal care so seamlessly.”
