GUM GRAFTING
If you experience receding gums, your oral health and the attractiveness of your smile are all at risk. At Bay Dental, we know that when a receding gum line is left unattended, gum disease and bone loss conspire to damage the structure of your smile. Also, the exposed tooth roots are extremely sensitive, are prone to developing cavities, and simply don’t appear healthy.
A gum graft describes medical periodontal treatments that cover an exposed tooth root surface area with implanted oral tissue. Exposed tooth roots are the outcome of loss of bone around the teeth, which, in turn, cause gum recession. Typical causes of this recession can include overly aggressive brushing, incorrect brushing techniques, or the presence of or history of gum disease. Other causes include misaligned teeth or extreme teeth clenching and grinding.
At Bay Dental, we use gum tissue grafts to replace gum tissue that has receded from the teeth, exposing a substantial quantity of tooth root. Candidates for gum grafting are troubled by the look of their declining gum line, and may be experiencing discomfort or a severe level of sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages because of the exposed roots.
During this procedure, a slice of tissue is removed from the roof of the mouth or gently moved over from adjacent areas to offer a stable band of attached gingiva around the tooth. The gingival graft may be positioned in such a way to cover the exposed portion of the root. This procedure is highly predictable and leads to a stable, healthy band of attached tissue around the tooth.
Your body’s natural recovery process takes over after the grafting procedure is finished. Throughout this time, new blood vessels form in the graft and help it to integrate with the surrounding tissue. A successful graft can reduce or eliminate issues like tooth sensitivity and additional gum recession, while enhancing the beauty of your smile.
