GUM SURGERY

Gum surgery may be required when the tissue around your teeth, gums, and/or jawbone is infected or cosmetically undesirable and cannot be fixed with a non-surgical treatment. At Bay Dental, we take your complete oral health history into consideration before suggesting gum surgery.

There are typically two factors that a person may consider for gum surgery: cosmetic or medical. One reason is for aesthetic purposes and the other is out of need due to disease or other medical, gum associated problems.

At our downtown Vancouver dental office, there are a number of different types of gum surgery treatment that an individual might require if disease is present. One of the most typical causes of gum disease is the presence of extreme bacteria accumulation in the mouth. Certain elements such as medications and chronic diseases can make somebody more vulnerable to gum disease, even if they follow a thorough oral care regimen daily and take proper care of their teeth.

Some of the reasons our Vancouver dental team may advise gum surgery include:

  • To restore gum tissues lost to gum disease (guided tissue regrowth) — this procedure is frequently combined with bone grafting to provide support to the teeth.
  • To cosmetically improve your gum line (muco-gingival surgery) — this procedure grafts soft oral tissues into the gum line to fill out areas that have become recessed. The gum grafts hide exposed tooth roots to enable a more aesthetically-appealing appearance.
  • To prepare your teeth for dental mitigations — this procedure is to reveal more of the tooth’s root, effectively extending the crown of the tooth. Crown extending is reserved for clients who have decay below the gum line or have inadequate tooth structure to support a dental restoration.
